Han Gao (b. 1998, Hunan, China) is an interdisciplinary artist, sound designer and emerging researcher working across sound, moving image, performance and writing.
Her practice investigates listening as both an artistic and social practice, asking how sound, movement and embodied experience shape memory, perception and human relationships. Working through field recording, spoken word, participatory events and experimental forms of documentation, she develops listening as a method of artistic inquiry and social research.
Han’s projects combine field recording, radio, spoken word, movement and collaborative situations as forms of embodied fieldwork. Rather than treating sound as representation, she approaches listening as a way of producing knowledge through sensory experience, social encounters and place.
Growing up within a patriarchal family continues to inform Han’s inquiry into inherited narratives, vulnerability, and the politics of voice. While rooted in personal experience, her practice moves beyond autobiography, investigating how embodied experiences resonate across collective and cultural contexts. Through experimental fieldwork and poetic forms of documentation, she explores how fragmented memories, everyday encounters, and shifting environments become sites of knowledge and transformation.
Alongside her individual practice, Han founded chimimora, an interdisciplinary platform for artistic research, public listening and cross-cultural collaboration. Through screenings, performances, workshops and experimental gatherings, Chimimora functions as an evolving site for collective inquiry into migration, memory and social imagination.
Ongoing research explores listening as a social practice through sound, movement and relational fieldwork.
